Bengaluru, Sept 8, 2025 – The Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS) is set to introduce a major revamp of its dental curriculum after a long gap of 14 years. The revised curriculum will be rolled out starting from the academic year 2025-26, impacting nearly 2,500 students annually across 37 affiliated dental colleges.
According to Dr. Prabhuji MLV, Dean of the Dental Faculty at RGUHS, the new curriculum will officially incorporate regulations mandated by the Dental Council of India (DCI), ensuring greater compliance and improved academic standards.
Key Changes in the New Dental Curriculum
- Nine-Year Completion Rule
- Dentistry is a five-year program (four years of academics plus one year of internship).
- As per DCI’s 2016 directive, students must complete the course within nine years.
- While RGUHS colleges have been informally practicing this, the new curriculum will formally enforce it.
- Mandatory Three-Month External Hospital Practice
- Dental students will now be required to complete three months of practice in hospitals outside their colleges.
- This rule, already part of DCI guidelines, will be strictly monitored to ensure compliance.
- Integration of New-Age Technology
- The updated curriculum will include modern dental practices such as implantology, digital dentistry, and advanced dental technologies.
- These will be taught through dedicated chapters and training modules to prepare students for evolving global healthcare standards.
Why This Matters
The last major revamp of the RGUHS dental curriculum was in 2011. Since then, although the syllabus has undergone minor updates, the overall curriculum framework remained unchanged. The new changes are expected to:
- Improve academic rigor.
- Enhance practical training.
- Bridge the gap between traditional dental education and modern clinical practices.
This move is seen as a progressive step in Indian dental education, aligning students with global best practices while strengthening their career prospects in both clinical and research fields.
