Faculty Crisis Deepens at KGMU as Seven Senior Doctors Resign in Two Months.

Lucknow, September 7, 2025:
The ongoing faculty retention crisis at King George’s Medical University (KGMU) has intensified, with seven senior doctors resigning in just two months, raising serious concerns about staffing and patient care at the prestigious institution.

In the latest development, four senior faculty members—Dr. Manu Agarwal (Psychiatry), Dr. Tanvi Bhargava (Anesthesia), Dr. Ashok Kumar Gupta (Plastic Surgery), and Dr. Karan Kaushik (Cardiac Anesthesia)—tendered their resignations by paying three months’ salary in lieu of notice, ensuring their immediate release. Dr. Bhargava has joined SGPGIMS, Dr. Gupta has moved to the Ram Manohar Lohia Institute of Medical Sciences (RMLIMS), while Dr. Kaushik has taken up a position at a private hospital.

These exits follow the recent departures of Prof. Ajay Verma (Respiratory Medicine), who became Head of Department at RMLIMS; Prof. Kshitij Srivastava (Neurosurgery), now with a private hospital in Alambagh; and Prof. Adarsh Tripathi (Psychiatry), who is currently serving his notice period.

The trend is not new for KGMU, which has previously lost several distinguished specialists, including Dr. Madhukar Mittal (Endocrine Medicine), Dr. Sant Pandey (Nephrology), Dr. Sunil Kumar (Neurosurgery), and Dr. Anupam Wakhlu (Rheumatology), among others.

Why are Doctors Leaving?

Senior faculty cite financial disparity as the primary driver of the exodus. Government medical faculty salaries range between ₹1.25 lakh and ₹3 lakh per month, while private hospitals offer packages several times higher—often exceeding ₹10 lakh monthly, along with additional perks.

Another major concern is the uniform pay structure, which fails to differentiate between non-clinical faculty and super-specialists, despite the latter undergoing years of additional training and working longer clinical hours.

University and Association Reactions

KGMU spokesperson Prof. K.K. Singh stated that the resigning doctors had joined recently and left either for better appointments or personal reasons.

However, the KGMU Teachers’ Association has demanded broader policy reforms. Its general secretary, Prof. Santosh Kumar, emphasized, “The government should formulate a policy for doctors educated in government institutions. There is job security here and immense scope to serve the poor, which is not the case in the private sector.”

With senior faculty continuing to exit, the crisis underscores the urgent need for reforms in pay structure and retention policies to safeguard both education and patient care at KGMU.
