The investigation into the alleged NEET UG 2026 question-paper leak has taken a striking turn, with the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) identifying a hospital in Latur, Maharashtra, as an alleged location where leaked Chemistry questions were provided to a student weeks before the examination.

According to details emerging from the CBI chargesheet and court submissions, Siddhivinayak Hospital in Latur allegedly became a meeting point between an NTA-linked Chemistry expert, a coaching-centre owner and students connected to the alleged leak network. The investigation has also uncovered handwritten Chemistry questions, digital evidence and alleged financial transactions that the agency says help establish the chain of events.

It is important to note that the allegations are part of an ongoing criminal case and the accused are presumed innocent unless convicted by a court.

The hospital room at the centre of the investigation

The latest details reported from the CBI investigation indicate that the son of Shivraj Raghunath Motegaonkar, who owns Renukai Career Coaching Institute in Latur, attended special Chemistry sessions at Siddhivinayak Hospital.

According to the student’s statement cited in the investigation, he was directed by his father to visit the hospital to meet Chemistry teacher P V Kulkarni, who had reportedly been involved in the preparation of NEET questions.

The student allegedly attended sessions on April 18, April 19 and April 22, where Kulkarni conducted Chemistry revision classes lasting approximately 1.5 to two hours. During these sessions, questions and answers were allegedly dictated from papers carried by Kulkarni, with the student writing them down in a notebook.

Across the sessions, the student reportedly recorded 132 Chemistry questions and answers.

The investigation further indicates that the student identified the hospital receptionist and the individuals involved during questioning. The CBI also examined hospital records and statements relating to access to the third floor, although the receptionist reportedly told investigators that the hospital did not maintain a visitor register for people who were not patients.

132 handwritten questions become a major piece of evidence

The hospital sessions became particularly significant after investigators recovered images of handwritten Chemistry questions from a mobile phone connected to Motegaonkar.

In court submissions, the CBI said it recovered 36 images, including five duplicate images, containing 132 handwritten Chemistry questions. The agency alleged that approximately 111 of these questions matched questions in the NTA’s master question sets prepared for NEET UG 2026.

The CBI also reportedly used metadata analysis to determine that the images were captured around April 23, 2026, roughly 10 days before the May 3 examination.

This timing has become an important part of the agency’s case because the questions were allegedly available before candidates appeared for the examination.

According to the CBI’s court submission, Motegaonkar allegedly paid ₹5 lakh to procure Chemistry questions from Kulkarni. The agency has alleged that the questions were subsequently used in a wider network involving students and other individuals.

The alleged “guess paper” adds another layer

The investigation has also examined material circulated by coaching networks before the examination.

Earlier in the probe, investigators examined a set of Chemistry questions circulated by a Latur coaching institute as a “guess paper”. Reports indicated that 43 of the 45 Chemistry questions in one examined set allegedly matched questions appearing in the actual NEET examination.

The CBI later told the court that a larger 150-page “guess paper” containing around 410 questions had allegedly been circulated to some candidates, with approximately 120 questions reportedly appearing in the Chemistry section of the examination.

These findings are among the reasons investigators have focused on the relationship between coaching centres, paper setters, intermediaries and beneficiaries.

From Latur to a wider network

The alleged leak investigation has not remained confined to Latur.

The CBI has questioned or arrested individuals linked to different locations, including Delhi, Jaipur, Gurgaon, Nashik, Pune, Latur and Ahilyanagar. The agency’s investigation has examined suspected paper buyers, coaching personnel, teachers, students and intermediaries.

The probe also expanded to parents suspected of allegedly paying money to obtain leaked material for their children. In May, investigators questioned Latur-based paediatrician Manoj Shirure, who was suspected of purchasing leaked material for his son, according to reports.

The CBI has alleged that the hospital premises run by Shirure were used in the chain through which Chemistry questions were allegedly passed to candidates.

CBI files 20,000-page chargesheet against 13 accused

The investigation reached a major milestone in July when the CBI filed its chargesheet against 13 accused persons before a Delhi court.

The chargesheet reportedly runs to around 20,000 pages and cites 360 witnesses, 422 documents and 43 material objects. The allegations include criminal conspiracy, cheating, criminal breach of trust, destruction of evidence and offences under the Prevention of Corruption Act and the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Act, 2024.

The CBI has also reportedly told the court that its investigation traced the alleged chain from paper setters to intermediaries and beneficiary candidates. Another significant finding reported from the chargesheet is that the agency did not identify any government official, including an NTA office-bearer, as being involved in the alleged leak.

Why the NEET UG 2026 examination was cancelled

The controversy began after allegations of question-paper leakage and irregularities surrounding the May 3, 2026 NEET UG examination.

The National Testing Agency cancelled the May 3 examination following inputs examined in coordination with central agencies and investigative findings shared by law-enforcement authorities. A re-examination was subsequently conducted on June 21, 2026.

The NTA’s official NEET portal now lists the 2026 score card, final answer key for the re-examination and other examination-related notices.

The cancellation affected millions of medical aspirants and resulted in an additional examination cycle, further delaying the admission process.

Investigation also raises questions about examination security

The CBI’s broader findings have raised questions beyond the alleged individuals involved in the leak.

Recent reports indicate that the agency identified security lapses in the preparation of the NEET UG 2026 examination, including concerns relating to security protocols, CCTV surveillance and the involvement of overlapping groups during different stages of question-paper preparation and finalisation.

Such findings could have implications for how India’s largest medical entrance examination is secured in future years.

For students, the issue is larger than the alleged circulation of a few questions. NEET is the gateway to undergraduate medical and dental education for millions of aspirants. The central question is no longer simply whether questions were circulated before the examination, but how confidential examination material allegedly travelled from the question-setting process to coaching networks and, eventually, candidates.
