AIDS could be consigned to the History books and 2025 can be THE YEAR.

A decade ago, the world set a bold goal to end the AIDS pandemic by 2030, but progress is lagging. New HIV infections were far more than the desired target and AIDS-related deaths continued at a rate of one per minute.

Lenacapavir, named Breakthrough of the Year, is a long-acting HIV drug that prevents new infections with just two shots annually and helps those living with HIV stay healthy. At the same time, trials for a once-a-year injectable version were announced. This innovative treatment could mark the beginning of a new era in HIV prevention and care.

A global effort to make this treatment available to the high-risk population can end this pandemic. If we seize this opportunity, we could achieve what has never been done before: ending a pandemic without a cure or vaccine while ensuring the survival of those most affected.
